Medford, Oregon- A Flood Watch has been issued for portions of southwest Oregon and northern California, effective from Saturday morning through 4:00 PM Sunday afternoon. The watch covers valleys west of the Cascades, including Roseburg, Medford, Cave Junction, Grants Pass, Coos Bay, Gold Beach, Yreka, and Mount Shasta City.
Overview
The National Weather Service warns that excessive rainfall during this period may lead to flooding. Rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable, as current water levels are already elevated. Urban areas with poor drainage may also experience significant impacts, with clogged storm drains and ditches exacerbating the situation.
Expected Impacts
• Rising Water Levels: Creeks and streams may overflow, with potential flooding in nearby areas.
• Urban Flooding: Poor drainage in cities and towns could lead to localized flooding.
• 1” – 3” of rain possible for the Rogue Valley and westside Valleys. 3” – 6” in the Mountain Ranges. 8” of rain is possible along the southern Oregon Coast
• Infrastructure Challenges: Debris accumulation in storm drains and ditches may hinder water flow.
Preparedness
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely. Preparedness actions include:
• Having an emergency kit ready.
• Staying informed of potential upgrades to Flood Warnings.
• Taking steps to protect property, such as clearing drains and elevating valuables.
Advisory for Residents
Individuals living near rivers or streams should prepare for potential evacuation if conditions worsen. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, as water depth may be deceptive and dangerous.
