MEDFORD, Ore. (Jul. 28, 2026) — A nationwide ground stop for American Airlines flights disrupted air travel Tuesday evening after the airline experienced an information technology outage, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA issued the ground stop for American Airlines flights that had not yet departed, temporarily preventing additional aircraft from taking off while the airline worked to resolve the issue.
Despite the disruption, American Airlines Flight 6253 from Rogue Valley International Medford Airport (MFR) successfully completed its scheduled flight, landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 showed a growing backlog of American Airlines aircraft at airports across the country as the ground stop took effect.
As of Tuesday evening, the remaining inbound and outbound American Airlines flights at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport continued to appear on schedule. However, travelers are encouraged to check directly with American Airlines for the latest flight status before heading to the airport, as delays and schedule changes remain possible while the airline restores normal operations.
The cause of the IT outage was not immediately disclosed, and no estimate was provided for when normal operations would fully resume.
UPDATE: The stoppage has been lifted
