Medford, Oregon- Medford Firefighters responded to a structure fire on North Riverside Avenue this morning. The call came in at 9:54 a.m., reporting a small home engulfed in flames.
Upon arrival, fire crews found the residence heavily involved, but the sole occupant had evacuated safely before emergency responders reached the scene. Thanks to swift action, the fire was brought under control within eight minutes, with full suppression achieved by 10:02 a.m.
Despite the rapid response, the home sustained significant fire and smoke damage, rendering it uninhabitable. The American Red Cross is providing temporary support to the displaced occupant.
Medford Police assisted on-site, managing traffic and notifying nearby residents. Fire investigators later determined that the fire was accidental, caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
In a public statement, fire officials emphasized the importance of fire safety measures, including maintaining working smoke alarms and proper disposal of smoking materials. They urged residents who smoke to do so outdoors and to use non-combustible containers filled with water or sand for discarding smoking waste.
No injuries were reported. Authorities continue to remind the community of the critical role fire prevention plays in protecting lives and property.
