Flood Watch Issued for SW Oregon: Heavy Rainfall Poses Risk of Landslides

Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch for portions of southwestern Oregon, encompassing Curry and Josephine Counties, the Siskiyou Mountains, and the southern Oregon Cascades. The advisory remains in effect through Friday evening, November 22, 2024.

The region is expected to experience significant rainfall, raising concerns about landslides, rock falls, and debris flows, particularly in steep terrain and areas previously affected by wildfires. Officials warn that heavy precipitation could destabilize slopes, potentially endangering residents, travelers, and infrastructure.

Understanding Debris Flows

Debris flows are rapidly moving, highly destructive landslides that consist of a mix of water, soil, rocks, and vegetation. These flows can traverse steep hillsides and narrow canyons at speeds faster than a person can run, making them particularly hazardous. They often travel for miles, posing a threat to people, structures, and roads situated in their path.

Precautionary Measures

Authorities advises residents and travelers in the affected areas to remain aware and take the following precautions:

Stay Informed: Monitor local radio, TV, weather radio, or online updates. If evacuation orders are issued, act without delay.

Pay Attention to Sounds: Unusual noises, such as cracking trees or knocking boulders, may signal an imminent debris flow. Any sign of danger should prompt immediate evacuation.

Observe Waterways: Changes in stream conditions, such as sudden muddiness or fluctuations in flow, may indicate upstream activity. Leave the area immediately if these signs are observed.

Drive Cautiously: Assume roads may be hazardous, especially at night. Be alert for falling rocks or debris on roadsides.

Increased Risks in Burned Areas

Recent wildfires in the region have exacerbated the risk of debris flows, as burned soil is less stable and more prone to erosion. These areas require heightened caution, as the likelihood of landslides is significantly greater.
