Central Point, Oregon- Douglas County Roads has informed Jackson County officials that it will no longer perform winter maintenance, including snow plowing, on a 6-mile section of Tiller Trail Highway between Tison Road and the Jackson County line. The decision leaves a critical stretch of the highway without winter services, potentially affecting safety and accessibility for travelers.
Jackson County Roads and Parks Director Steve Lambert confirmed that Jackson County will continue to provide winter maintenance on its portion of the highway, which extends from Highway 62 to the Douglas/Jackson County line.
“We are dedicated to ensuring the safety of the travelers on our county road system by continuing to perform the very important work of snow removal and application of traction material on this important county road,” Lambert stated.
Lambert expressed concern about the impacts of Douglas County’s decision, emphasizing the importance of the highway as a route between Interstate 5, Highway 62, and the two counties. He noted that the section in Douglas County, located at higher elevations, is particularly prone to heavy snowfall, which could render the road impassable during winter weather events.
Travelers are advised to plan for potential disruptions and evaluate alternative routes during the winter months. “We sincerely hope Douglas County reevaluates their decision,” Lambert added.
The Tiller Trail Highway serves as a vital connection for regional traffic, and the cessation of winter services on a key portion raises questions about long-term transportation and safety strategies between the two counties.
