Medford, Oregon – Speeding has remained a persistent factor in motor vehicle fatalities nationwide, contributing to approximately one-third of all crash-related deaths, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grim statistics reveal that in 2021 alone, speeding claimed the lives of 12,330 individuals across the United States.
In response to this alarming trend, March has been designated as Speed Awareness Month, prompting local law enforcement agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), to launch a concerted effort to address this deadly driving behavior. Collaborating with other local agencies, JCSO aims to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and curb its prevalence on the county’s roads and highways.
Throughout the month of March, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, along with its partners, will be actively engaging in a statewide speed awareness campaign. The initiative, funded by both NHTSA and the Oregon Department of Transportation, seeks to educate drivers about the hazards associated with speeding and promote responsible driving habits.
As part of the campaign, law enforcement agencies will be deploying various tactics to deter speeding, including increased patrols and targeted enforcement in high-risk areas. Additionally, educational materials and resources will be distributed to raise public awareness and promote safer driving practices.
