Klamath County, Oregon – On Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 10:02 a.m., Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to a scene unfolding on Hwy-97, near milepost 174. A two-vehicle crash involving a southbound Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and trailer and a northbound Honda Pilot resulted in major crash, leaving one individual dead and another fighting for life.
Preliminary investigations conducted by OSP revealed that the Peterbilt CMV, driven by Desiree Danielle Johnson, 34, of St. Petersburg (FL), lost control and jackknifed in the roadway. The CMV spun uncontrollably, breaching into the path of a northbound Honda Pilot, driven by Elise Adair Farrens, 37, of La Pine. The collision between the two vehicles proved fatal for Farrens, who died on scene.
Additionally, a passenger in the Honda, identified as Daviana Marie Trussell, 23, of La Pine, suffered critical injuries in the collision. Trussell, who was pregnant at the time, experienced the loss of her unborn child due to injuries sustained during the crash.
Desiree Danielle Johnson, the operator of the Peterbilt CMV, reportedly sustained minor injuries in the collision.
The highway remained closed for approximately 3.5 hours as authorities conducted their on-scene investigation.
In their efforts to manage the aftermath of the collision, OSP received assistance from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Department, Crescent Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
