Jacksonville, Oregon — Mayor Donna Bowen of Jacksonville honored Sue Miler, a local resident and multi-organization volunteer, as Jacksonville’s 2023 Person of the Year during the City Council meeting held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. The recognition ceremony took place at Jacksonville City Hall at 6:00 p.m.
Miler, who currently serves as the board president for the Jacksonville Community Center (JCC), was honored for her outstanding contributions to the community. Mayor Bowen commended Miler for her pivotal role in spearheading the development of the Jacksonville Community Center, citing her recent accomplishment of successfully concluding a fund drive that raised over $750,000 for the JCC’s capital campaign.
“Sue Miler is being recognized for her work in developing our Jacksonville Community Center,” stated Mayor Bowen. “Sue has continued to be active with the Community Center organization and currently serves as Board President. She has contributed hours of her expertise and time to further the development and success of the Jacksonville Community Center.”
Julie Raefield, the executive director of JCC, expressed her admiration for Miler’s leadership, highlighting the diverse range of programs and activities the Center now offers under her guidance. Raefield emphasized Miler’s significant role in enriching the Jacksonville community and enhancing its quality of life.
Miler’s journey of community service began when she relocated to Jacksonville in 2009, following a distinguished 20-year tenure as a senior executive for the AARP Foundation in Washington, DC. Her expertise in leading community programs benefited numerous individuals across the United States and Puerto Rico. Upon settling in Southern Oregon, Miler dedicated her time and skills to volunteering for various local organizations, including the Senior and Disability Services Program of the Rogue Valley Council of Government, the Jacksonville Garden Club, the Jacksonville Boosters Club, and the Southern Oregon Center for Community Partnerships.
In 2018, Miler took the helm of the capital campaign to expand and renovate the JCC, a project that had been a longstanding aspiration for local residents for over two decades. The successful completion of the campaign led to the grand opening of the Center in 2019. Since 2020, Miler has served as the president of JCC’s board, steering the nonprofit organization towards continued growth and success.
Jacksonville community leaders remark that Sue Miler’s commitment to community service and her transformative leadership within the Jacksonville Community Center exemplify the spirit of civic engagement and dedication to enhancing the well-being of others, making her a deserving recipient of Jacksonville’s 2023 Person of the Year award.
