This is an update to our previous coverage of this long incident.
On Monday, October 2, at 11:18 a.m., Medford Police Officers responded to a concerning report of a disorderly subject vandalizing property belonging to a neighbor on the 400 block of King Street. The incident took a dangerous turn when officers learned that the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Timothy Tracy Russell, was armed with a black, semi-automatic rifle equipped with a drum magazine.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers immediately made contact with Russell as he was seen walking back to his residence. In a tense and alarming encounter, Russell not only refused to comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon but also fled into his residence while expressing a desire for officers to use lethal force on him.

The situation escalated rapidly, prompting Medford Police to call in additional resources. Elements of the Medford Police Department’s SWAT team, detectives, and negotiators promptly arrived to provide support and expertise in handling this high-risk incident.
After several hours of intense negotiation with Russell, law enforcement authorities resorted to deploying gas into the residence to encourage his exit. Ultimately, Russell emerged from the house but continued to resist arrest, leading to the use of a less lethal 40-millimeter round. In addition, a K9 unit was deployed to assist in bringing the situation under control.
Russell, once he is medically cleared, will face legal proceedings and is expected to be lodged at the local jail.
Residents in the area can breathe a sigh of relief as law enforcement successfully resolved this incident without any injuries to civilians or officers. Medford Police continue to investigate the incident and will provide further updates as the case progresses.
