Local Firefighters Continue to Extinguish Wildfires After Lightning Storms

Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) firefighters have been hard at work battling the aftermath of lightning-caused fires in Jackson and Josephine Counties.

In Josephine County, the Thunder Ranch Fire, situated southeast of Galice, is now 95% mopped up, marking significant headway from its initial status. Firefighters are still searching the area for any remaining traces of heat or smoke, then promptly extinguishing hotspots as they are identified. The fire, which had been 100% lined, is now nearing complete containment.

Another challenge in Josephine County, the Whiskey Creek Fire, has presented a unique set of obstacles. Located near the west fork of Whiskey Creek and north of the Rogue River, this fire spans 30 acres and is fully lined. The rugged terrain, steep slopes, and potential hazards like falling trees have required extra caution. To mitigate these dangers, tree fallers have been actively removing hazard trees, enabling firefighters to penetrate deeper into the heart of the fire for mop-up operations.

Here in Jackson County, a new fire ignited on the 2900 block of Dead Indian Memorial Road, sparking an immediate response from ODF and Jackson County Fire District 5. The teams managed to contain the grassfire, employing resources such as engines, a bulldozer, and a hand crew from ODF. By stopping the fire’s spread at 8.5 acres, the teams successfully prevented further escalation.

Currently, this newly reported fire in Jackson County is 100% lined and 90% mopped up. Authorities are actively investigating the cause behind the incident to gain a clearer understanding.

Despite an anticipated cooldown in weather conditions, the communities in Jackson and Josephine counties must remain vigilant due to the persistent threat of Extreme Fire Danger. The combined efforts of ODF firefighters, alongside local responders, have significantly aided in controlling these fires, but the need for continued awareness and preparedness remains impossible.
