In response to the growing threat posed by the Wiley Fire near Sweet Home in Linn County, the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has taken decisive action by dispatching two task forces to combat the blaze. Hailing from Multnomah and Polk counties, these task forces consist of a dedicated team of 23 firefighters, equipped with eight engines and two water tenders.
The OSFM’s rapid deployment was facilitated through Immediate Response, a strategic tool employed to augment firefighting resources beyond the scope of a conflagration. Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple emphasized the critical nature of this reinforcement, stating, “Over the last few days, firefighters have been working relentlessly to contain the Wiley Fire and provide enhanced protection to those within the evacuation vicinity. With heightened fire activity along the west slope of the Cascades in recent days and a forecast projecting soaring temperatures and unstable weather starting Sunday, we are bolstering local crews with additional support.”
Originating on Monday, August 7, within the confines of the Sweet Home Ranger District near Buck Mountain, in the Little Wiley Creek drainage, the Wiley Fire has swiftly grown to an estimated 165 acres as of Thursday morning. Containment efforts have not yet yielded progress, registering at 0 percent. The collaborative efforts of the U.S. Forest Service, the Oregon Department of Forestry, and the Sweet Home Fire District have seen an aggressive response, spanning both ground and aerial tactics.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office has implemented a range of evacuation notices to ensure the safety of those residing in proximity to the blaze. Level 1 and 2 evacuation notices are currently in place, underlining the importance of vigilance and preparedness among local residents.
