Helicopters Continue Water Drops to Reduce Flat Fire Activity

In an ongoing effort to combat the Flat Fire and contain its spread, helicopters carried out numerous water drops yesterday. These operations aimed to curtail the fire’s activity and limit its potential to spread further. Despite the persistence of smaller fuels burning, the slow ignition of brush has contributed to constraining the fire’s expansion.

Meteorological conditions are expected to provide some respite in the battle against the flames. Cooler temperatures and slightly higher humidities are anticipated today and tomorrow, before temperatures are projected to rise over the upcoming weekend. This change in weather pattern offers a window of opportunity for firefighting efforts to make headway.

As part of the firefighting strategy, crews have begun soil stabilization work in areas that have been impacted by the fire, along with continuing fire suppression activities. While some smoke may be visible from hotspots in the southwestern part of the fire, it’s reassuring to note that these hotspots remain well within the established containment line.

Firefighting teams are actively engaged in evaluating and enhancing both existing and alternative containment lines. Structural protection resources are on standby in the Agness area, underscoring the readiness of firefighters to respond to any unforeseen shifts in fire behavior.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution when traversing the fire-affected region. Slowing down, using headlights, and remaining vigilant for oncoming traffic can significantly contribute to ensuring the safety of all individuals on the road.

Weather conditions over the fire zone are anticipated to be relatively milder, with temperatures cooling slightly and increased moisture levels. Wind patterns are expected to mirror those observed yesterday, with a west-northwesterly flow during the afternoon hours. Similar conditions are projected for Thursday, while a change is expected on Friday as temperatures rise and humidity levels decrease.

In response to the ongoing fire situation, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest (RRSNF) has issued a closure order affecting the fire area. This closure encompasses various trails, roads, and a portion of the Illinois River. Notably, Oak Flat Campground, Game Lake and Wild Horse Campgrounds, and Snow Camp Lookout Recreation Rentals are all temporarily closed. Specific road closures include the Chetco River Road (FSR 1376) and Chetco/Pistol River Road (FSR 1407). However, the public’s access to the Big Rock swimming hole on the Illinois River remains unaffected.

As a precautionary measure, Level 1 “Get Ready” evacuation status has been implemented for areas proximate to the Flat Fire. This status ensures that residents and communities are prepared to take appropriate action if conditions evolve.

The current acreage affected by the Flat Fire stands at 33,811 acres. A total of 812 personnel are involved in the firefighting efforts, supported by 20 crews, 9 helicopters, 19 engines, 4 bulldozers, 31 water tenders, 5 masticators, and 7 feller/bunchers. Presently, containment efforts have achieved a notable progress of 39%.
