US Forest Service Mourns Loss of On-Duty Oregon Firefighter

It is with heavy hearts that we report the tragic loss of a Forest Service firefighter employed by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Benjamin Charles Sapper, a 21-year-old first-year hand crew member, lost his life in an on-duty vehicle accident near Powers, Oregon.

Hailing from Boulder, Colorado, Benjamin was a bright soul with a passion for knowledge and a desire to serve his community. Graduating from Boulder High School and the University of Colorado with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics, he was a talented individual who excelled in various disciplines.

Outside of his firefighting duties, Benjamin was an avid baseball player, chess enthusiast, and skilled skier. He had a keen interest in philosophy and mathematics, always engaging others in stimulating discussions on diverse topics.

Having joined the Forest Service with a strong sense of camaraderie, Benjamin felt privileged to be part of a great team, working diligently on the Gold Beach Ranger District. His commitment to service was evident in his decision to pursue graduate studies in Earth Sciences at the University of British Columbia this fall.

Benjamin’s dedication and passion touched the lives of those around him, earning him the love and admiration of his colleagues and friends. His untimely passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by the close-knit Gold Beach and Powers Ranger Districts.

Gold Beach District Ranger Kailey Guerrant expressed her grief, stating, “This is a devastating loss of one of our own Gold Beach firefighters. We have a tight-knit community on the Gold Beach and Powers Ranger Districts, and we stand together in grief and support for his family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this heartbreaking time.”

As the community mourns the loss of their cherished firefighter, details on how to honor Benjamin will be shared in the coming days.
