Investigation Underway into Inmate Death at Jackson County Jail

Detectives from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the death of an Adult-In-Custody (AIC) individual that occurred on Thursday, July 27, at the Jackson County Jail. An autopsy conducted by an Oregon State Police (OSP) forensic pathologist on the following day revealed that the AIC passed away due to natural causes. The AIC, a 64-year-old individual, had been booked into the Jail on July 25, 2023, facing both local and out-of-state charges.

On the day of the incident, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Corrections deputies and Jail medical staff responded to the AIC, who was in apparent medical distress. Immediate life-saving measures were initiated by the Jail staff, and emergency medical services were called for assistance. Regrettably, despite their efforts, the AIC was pronounced deceased at 6:30 p.m.

In adherence to standard protocols with in-custody deaths at the Jail, the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU) was activated to lead the investigation. The OSP has been appointed as the lead agency in this case, and their investigation is ongoing.

As a gesture of respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will not disclose the AIC’s name at this stage.

The authorities are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding this event, while ensuring transparency and thoroughness in their investigation.

Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
