MEDFORD, Ore. (Apr. 4, 2026) — A 32-year-old motorcyclist remains hospitalized after a severe crash Thursday morning on Crater Lake Avenue left him with life-threatening injuries and resulted in the amputation of part of his leg.
Dakota Greenwade was riding from the gym to work around 7:30 a.m. April 2 when he was involved in a T-bone collision with a vehicle. He was dragged more than 30 feet beyond the point of impact, according to information shared by family and friends.
Emergency crews treated him at the scene before transporting him to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Following an initial evaluation, Greenwade was found to have suffered a punctured lung, internal bleeding, a broken pelvis, fractures to both femurs and severe trauma to his left foot. He was later airlifted to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital for specialized care.
Greenwade underwent a 10-hour surgery to address multiple traumatic injuries. Surgeons repaired his pelvis and inserted rods and pins into both femurs. Due to the extent of the damage, his left leg was amputated just below the knee.
He received blood products during the procedure and “tolerated the procedures very well,” according to updates shared with the family. The surgical team reported that all repairs went smoothly and expressed satisfaction with the outcome. Greenwade is now stable, and his breathing tube is being removed as he continues into the next phase of recovery.
Greenwade, a diesel mechanic and U.S. Air Force veteran who served eight years, is the father of two children, Ryder, 9, and Lydia, 7. His family, including his parents, Dawn and Kane Greenwade, siblings Savannah and Sterling, and his partner, Karlene, are supporting him through what is expected to be a lengthy recovery.
He faces multiple additional surgeries, extensive rehabilitation and the process of being fitted for a prosthetic limb. Family members say it could be nine months or longer before he is able to return to work.
In a statement, his girlfriend, Karlene Edwards, said, “I don’t know the words to put on here. Dakota’s life changed in a moment on the morning of his 32nd birthday, April 2nd, 2026. Life will look very different for a while. Some have reached out to me about how to help & I really don’t have the answer to that but a family friend put this together to help with the financial portion of this life event.”
She added, “Dakota’s head is good (helmets are a lifesaver, please use them). Anything is appreciated. The main thing I can scream/ask of everyone- watch out for motorcycles. A second look and being aware of your surroundings can prevent this.”
Friends and family describe Greenwade as a devoted father and a deeply caring person whose presence brings comfort to those around him. They say the crash has placed significant emotional, physical and financial strain on his loved ones as they navigate his recovery.
Supporters have organized efforts to help cover mounting medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and ongoing care, while also providing stability for his children during his recovery.
