Since the passage of Measure 114 (M114), Jackson County Sheriffs Department (JCSO) reports they have been getting an increase in calls from individuals wanting to obtain a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) prior to when the measure takes effect on December 8th.
Over the past week JCSO has seen a significant increase in applications for CHL permits. As of now, having a CHL does not replace the need for a permit to purchase a firearm after December 8.
Prior to the passage of M114, JCSO was able to have a 7-day turnaround time on issuing CHL permits. Now with the increase of applications, that time frame has increased to around four weeks. JCSO says personnel are working diligently to get permits processed in a timely manner and officials strive to provide the best service possible. JCSO asks the public for their patience as they work through this.
Just a couple reminders regarding M114:
• There have been legal challenges to the measure and these court proceedings could provide updates or changes to what is believed by officials going forward on December 8.
• Once the measure goes into effect you will not be able to purchase a gun without a permit and a background check.
• There is no process set up to get a permit yet and local agencies are waiting on the state to outline the process local jurisdictions need to follow.
• As of now, having a CHL does not take the place of the permitting process of M114.
• The online training for obtaining a CHL permit will not meet the training standards under M114 as it is currently written and understood.
Medford Alert will continue to provide updates to this new measure moving forward as officials release more detailed information.
