Community Effort Revives Historic Downtown Medford Flag Tradition

MEDFORD, Ore. (Jul. 2, 2026) — Downtown Medford will once again be lined with American flags this Fourth of July as a long-standing holiday tradition returns through a collaborative effort involving the City of Medford, the Downtown Medford Association and United Way of Jackson County.

A total of 63 American flags have been installed along Main Street and Central Avenue, marking the revival of a display that had disappeared in recent years despite the original flag brackets remaining attached to downtown light poles.

The City of Medford and the Downtown Medford Association partnered to purchase new flags, while support from United Way of Jackson County helped make the project possible. Members of the Downtown Medford Association and community volunteers completed the installation ahead of the Independence Day holiday.

Organizers said restoring the display required more than replacing the flags. The team adapted the existing hardware to preserve the original brackets while creating a secure, durable installation designed to support the program for years to come.

The effort also serves as the launch of a broader community fundraising campaign led by the Downtown Medford Foundation, a nonprofit organization, to expand and sustain the flag program in preparation for America’s 250th birthday celebration.

The foundation is encouraging residents, businesses and supporters to contribute by sponsoring one or more flags, with the goal of maintaining the patriotic display as an annual downtown tradition.

“This project is a wonderful example of what can happen when the City, local organizations, downtown businesses, community members, and volunteers work together,” said Annie Jenkins, executive director of the Downtown Medford Association. “The flags are more than decorations—they are a symbol of connection and renewed energy in the heart of our city.”

The flags will remain displayed along Main Street and Central Avenue, creating a patriotic backdrop for Fourth of July festivities while celebrating the renewed partnership among local organizations and volunteers.

The Downtown Medford Association thanked the City of Medford, United Way of Jackson County, its members, downtown volunteers and community supporters for helping restore what organizers described as a cherished downtown tradition. Officials said the project reflects the collaborative spirit that continues to strengthen and revitalize downtown Medford while laying the groundwork for America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
