MEDFORD, Ore. (Jun. 27, 2026)— A long-vacant property along South Riverside Avenue in south Medford is set for a new purpose as construction moves forward on a next-generation electric vehicle charging facility designed to offer more than just a place to plug in.
The former Wendy’s restaurant site at 940 S. Riverside Ave., which has remained vacant since the building was demolished, will become a new IONNA Rechargery charging station, bringing one of the company’s newest charging concepts to Southern Oregon.
Unlike traditional charging stations, the Rechargery concept is designed as a destination for drivers while their vehicles charge. Plans call for an indoor driver lounge featuring secure restroom access, complimentary coffee service, food and beverage options, Wi-Fi, and seating areas where customers can relax or work. Outdoor amenities, including pet-friendly spaces, will also be available.
The station will include 12 ultra-fast charging stalls with both major connector standards, including four North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors and eight Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors. Chargers will be capable of delivering speeds of up to 400 kilowatts, allowing compatible electric vehicles to recharge significantly faster than many existing public charging stations.
IONNA is a joint venture created by eight of the world’s largest automakers: BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis and Toyota. The company aims to redefine the public charging experience by combining ultra-fast charging technology with customer-focused amenities and retail integration.
The company plans to deploy more than 30,000 ultra-fast charging points nationwide by 2030, supporting both urban and long-distance electric vehicle travel. Earlier this year, IONNA celebrated its second anniversary and reported significant growth, with more than 4,700 charging bays under contract, nearly 1,500 in construction or beyond, and more than 100 live charging locations operating across the country.
IONNA already operates a charging station in Ashland at 461 S. Valley View Road, though that location does not include the company’s newer indoor lounge concept planned for the Medford facility.
The project represents another investment in the region’s growing electric vehicle infrastructure while transforming a long-empty commercial property into a modern transportation amenity for both local drivers and travelers along the Interstate 5 corridor.
The south Medford location is targeting a fall 2026 opening.
