GRANTS PASS, Ore. (May. 4, 2026) — A thunderstorm that swept through southern Oregon on Saturday afternoon brought heavy rain and strong winds that toppled a large tree, severely damaging two homes and briefly trapping two residents inside, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:47 p.m. on May 3 in the 3300 block of Rogue River Highway, according to emergency responders.
Officials said the uprooted tree crashed into the residences, causing significant structural damage and leaving two people trapped within the debris. Emergency crews from Rural Metro Fire, Grants Pass Fire & Rescue, and American Medical Response worked together to extricate both individuals from the rubble.
Both residents were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, authorities said.
In addition to the structural damage, responders reported that a gas line was struck and damaged by the fallen tree. However, no fire or explosion occurred, and the scene was secured without further incident.
Crews remained on-site for some time to assess hazards, stabilize the affected area, and coordinate utility response.
Officials did not immediately release the identities of those involved.
