HILLSBORO, Ore. (Apr. 8, 2026) — The Oregon Republican Party announced that four Republican candidates for governor have qualified and confirmed their participation in a primary debate scheduled for April 16, as the party looks to reclaim the office after nearly four decades.
Oregon last elected a Republican governor in 1982, when Vic Atiyeh won reelection. He served two terms from 1979 to 1987, and no Republican has held the office since.
The debate will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at NW Events in Hillsboro.
Confirmed participants include Danielle Bethell, Ed Diehl, Christine Drazan and Chris Dudley. Party officials said the candidates met “objective, standard criteria” intended to ensure a fair and credible debate process.
The event will take place at 2900 NE Century Blvd., Suite 100. Public attendance is available for $25, while a free livestream will also be offered. Viewers can register through the party’s website.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Oregonians to hear directly from strong candidates who are ready to lead,” said ORP Chair Connie Whelchel. “At a time when our state is facing serious challenges—including struggling education outcomes, rising costs of living, high taxes, substance abuse issues, and businesses leaving Oregon—this debate provides voters with an important opportunity to evaluate new ideas and leadership approaches, and to consider the direction they want for themselves, their families, and the future of our state.”
ORP National Committeeman Dan Mason said the debate is intended to provide voters with information ahead of the election.
“We’re proud to host a debate that is grounded in fairness, transparency, and meaningful dialogue,” Mason said. “Our goal is to ensure voters have access to the information they need as they consider the future direction of our state.”
The Oregon Republican Party said the event is part of its effort to provide voters with a forum to compare candidates as the gubernatorial race develops.
