MEDFORD, Ore. (Apr. 8, 2026) — A local preservation commission has approved plans to remodel a historic downtown Medford building into a new multi-concept food and beverage destination.
The Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission on April 7 gave the green light following a public hearing for a project known as “Jay’s on 4th,” proposed by applicant Jesse Nunez. The site, located at 236 N. Front Street, falls within Medford’s Historic Preservation Overlay, requiring the project to meet specific historic review standards.
Plans call for transforming the former New Far East restaurant into a space housing multiple food and beverage concepts under a single owner. According to the proposal, at least three distinct offerings would operate from a shared kitchen.
The remodel includes a partial building expansion and interior renovations, featuring reconfigured dining and service areas, upgraded restrooms and the addition of an outdoor courtyard.

Proposed site improvements include parking adjustments, new entrance paving, planters, bicycle parking and a cantilevered entrance canopy. Commissioners also approved a designated mural location near the main entrance.
The building dates back to 1948, when it opened as Luman Grocery Store. It was designed by a prominent local architect and later became the Colony Club restaurant in 1965. The structure was remodeled again in 1974 for use as the Far East restaurant.
The commission’s approval allows the project to move forward under the city’s historic preservation guidelines.
