PHOENIX, Ore. (Mar. 31, 2026) — Medford Alert News is highlighting a senior shelter dog in need of a home as part of our Dog-of-the-Week campaign, this week. Tonya, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix, is currently housed at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
Tonya, a spayed female weighing about 23 pounds, may also have some Jack Russell Terrier in her lineage, according to shelter staff. While initially hesitant around new people when she first arrived, Tonya has since warmed up with the help of staff and volunteers. She now enjoys walks with a variety of handlers and is known to greet people along the way.
Described as a loyal and affectionate companion, Tonya would do best in a quiet home environment. Shelter staff noted that she may bark if left alone for extended periods, a behavior not uncommon in dogs adjusting to new surroundings.
As a senior dog, Tonya does have some medical considerations. She is expected to need dental care in the near future and has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. Additionally, she has a tendency to lick a spot on her right hind leg when stressed. Shelter veterinarians believe this behavior may improve once she is placed in a stable home environment.
Tonya’s adoption fee is partially sponsored through Friends of the Animals (FOTAS), reflecting an effort to encourage adoption of older animals that may require additional care.
The shelter encourages potential adopters to meet Tonya in person. The facility is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Those interested in adopting Tonya or learning more can contact the shelter directly at 541-774-6654.
