Dog-of-the-Week: “Benny” is a Senior Chihuahua Looking for a Quiet Home

PHOENIX, Ore. (Feb. 25, 2026) — The Jackson County Animal Shelter, in partnership with Medford Alert News, are featuring an unusually small companion as this week’s “Dog-of-the-Week,” highlighting a senior Chihuahua in need of a quiet home.

Benny, a 10-year-old neutered male Chihuahua weighing just 8 pounds, came to the shelter through law enforcement after his owner was hospitalized. Shelter officials said his previous owner is unable to take him back but provided background information to assist with his placement.

Staff describe Benny as highly social with people who enjoys attention and companionship. He walks well on a leash and likes going on walks. According to his previous owner, Benny does well with cats and with older, calm children but is uncomfortable around energetic children. He is also uneasy with other dogs, a behavior shelter staff have observed. An attempt to place him in a playgroup with small, older dogs was unsuccessful.

Benny is housebroken and trained to use pee pads. He enjoys car rides but prefers to be held or secured in a dog car basket or crate. He also comes with a coat for colder weather.

Shelter officials noted Benny has dental disease and requires canned food or softened kibble. He will need veterinary dental care in the near future. Because he is a senior pet, his adoption fee is partially sponsored by Friends of the Animals.

Those interested in meeting Benny can call the shelter at 541-774-6654 and press 5 for adoptions.
