Suspect Arrested in Salem Grocery Store Shooting

SALEM, Ore. (Feb. 15, 2026) — Authorities arrested a Monmouth man Friday in connection with a shooting outside a Salem grocery store that left no one injured.

Jonathan Roy Debnam, 33, was taken into custody following a confrontation at the U.S. Market in the 1000 block of Broadway Street NE. Police said the incident occurred around 6:55 p.m.

According to the Salem Police Department, a store clerk reported a conflict with a male patron. “The man then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and used the butt of the handgun to break a window at the store,” police said. As the suspect left the area, he fired shots toward the store, which landed a few feet from where the clerk was hiding. No one was injured.

Patrol officers quickly identified Debnam as the suspect, and detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit were called in to assist. Information was shared with local law enforcement agencies, and the Monmouth Police Department later located the suspect’s vehicle near their station.

Salem officers and a canine team, along with deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Independence and Monmouth police departments, coordinated the response. Debnam was apprehended when he attempted to return to the monitored vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Salem Police Department.

Debnam was lodged at the Marion County Jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. Additional charges may be pending.

The Salem Police Department expressed gratitude to all agencies involved. “We would like to thank the responding patrol officers, Violent Crimes Unit detectives, Keizer Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Monmouth Police Department, and Independence Police Department for their collaborative efforts in this investigation,” officials said.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and that further inquiries should be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office. The department reiterated its commitment to the Community Violence Reduction Initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime and holding offenders accountable.
