SILETZ, Ore. (Dec 12, 2025) — A landslide has closed Highway 229 near milepost 14, prompting evacuations and an ongoing emergency response, authorities said Friday.
The slide occurred around 1 p.m. and has impacted roughly a 0.2-mile stretch of roadway. The highway will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time, and motorists are urged to use alternate routes.
Officials asked the public to stay out of the impacted area. The slide affected up to five residential properties, with substantial damage reported to at least three homes. All known occupants in the area have been accounted for and safely evacuated, authorities said. Two displaced residents have been connected with the American Red Cross for assistance.
Debris from the slide — including earth, structural material and possibly vehicle debris — entered the Siletz River. The landslide originated on property owned by Weyerhaeuser above Highway 229 and continued downslope to properties below the highway and into the river. Representatives for Weyerhaeuser have been notified and are evaluating their property.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Transportation, Siletz Valley Rural Fire Department, and North Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
Lincoln County Emergency Management activated the county’s Emergency Operations Center to support the response, and state agencies have been notified regarding impacts to the river.
