One Dead, One Injured in Fiery Crash on Highway 238

JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. (Nov. 4, 2025) — A late-night crash on Highway 238 early Monday left one person dead and another injured after a vehicle went off the road and caught fire, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded at around 12:20 a.m. Monday to a single-vehicle crash near milepost 8, west of Grants Pass. Investigators said a westbound Subaru Impreza driven by Alexander Ray Yager, 21, of Grants Pass, failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the roadway, struck a power pole, and rolled multiple times before igniting.

Yager was able to escape the burning vehicle and was transported to a local hospital with what officials described as minor injuries. His passenger, Jacob Dean Mix, 36, of Grants Pass, was unable to exit and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said speed and impairment are believed to be primary factors in the crash. Highway 238 was closed for about eight hours as investigators from the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) documented the scene with assistance from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The CRU is a specialized unit that investigates fatal and critical injury crashes statewide, using advanced measurement tools and aerial systems to analyze crash dynamics.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
