Medford, Oregon- A FedEx driver was honored by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners this week after officials said his quick actions saved a young girl from a brutal dog attack late last year.
The board presented Chris Matthews with a Lifesaving Award on Tuesday for his role in rescuing a three-year-old girl during a Dec. 6, 2024, attack outside of Jacksonville.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), Matthews was delivering packages on Wagon Trail Road around noon when he spotted the child being mauled by two Cane Corso dogs inside a pen.
“Without hesitation, he ran toward the danger, shouting to draw the dogs’ attention and calling for help,” JCSO said in a statement. Nearby workers assisted as Matthews entered the enclosure, distracted the dogs and pulled the critically injured child to safety so she could receive emergency medical care.
Authorities said the girl has since fully recovered.
“Chris’s heroism and quick thinking saved the life of a three-year-old girl,” the sheriff’s office said. “His actions reflect the best values of courage, compassion, and responsibility.”
