Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Red Flag Warning for southern Oregon, citing the risk of abundant lightning strikes over dry fuels that could spark multiple wildfires. The warning is in effect from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. PDT on Wednesday and includes Fire Weather Zones 620, 621, and 622.
Forecasters expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms capable of producing significant lightning activity. While many of the storms are likely to carry precipitation, officials warn that lightning strikes could occur outside of storm cores—where little or no rainfall occurs—creating a high risk for new fire starts.

Gusty outflow winds are also anticipated, with speeds ranging from 35 to 50 mph and the potential to carry embers and fire debris up to 25 miles from the storm’s center. These conditions could contribute to rapid fire spread if ignitions occur.
Officials urge residents in affected areas to be ready to evacuate on short notice. “If you have not packed your go kit yet, now is the time to do so,” the NWS emphasized in its alert. Suggested preparations include gathering essential documents, medications, and other critical items, as well as ensuring that vehicles have full fuel tanks. More guidance is available at ready.gov/kit.
Residents are also reminded to follow all existing fire restrictions, which vary by county. Information on local emergency sign-ups and restrictions can be found at weather.gov/medford/wildfire.
A Red Flag Warning signals the presence or imminent arrival of weather conditions that promote extreme fire behavior. While no active fires are currently reported as a result of this warning, residents are advised to remain alert and have multiple ways to receive emergency updates.
