Grants Pass, Oregon- A large emergency response was launched early Saturday after several people became stranded during an unsanctioned nighttime float event on the Rogue River in Josephine County.
At approximately 12:16 a.m. on July 12, emergency crews from American Medical Response, Rural Metro Fire Department, Grants Pass Fire Department, and the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area near Robertson Bridge Road and Lower River Road following reports of a possible drowning. The incident occurred during a social media-promoted event known as the “River Glow Float,” which drew several hundred participants.
Multiple individuals between the ages of 5 and 47 were trapped on a large log in the river, with some losing flotation devices and others lacking required safety equipment such as life jackets. Several participants became separated from their groups and were initially reported missing.
The Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy and other first responders rescued five individuals and assisted seven more to safety. Multiple miles of the river were searched, and all missing persons were eventually located. No injuries required hospital transport, and medical personnel cleared all individuals on scene.
Authorities emphasized the significant risk such nighttime events pose to both participants and emergency personnel. The response to this incident lasted approximately three hours and temporarily reduced available resources for other community emergencies.
As part of the follow-up investigation, authorities have issued or plan to issue a total of 17 citations, including 13 for Unsafe Boating Operation, two for Recklessly Endangering, one for Disorderly Conduct, and one for Hosting an Event Without a Permit.
