OSSA Expels Deschutes County Sheriff Following Investigation

Bend, Oregon- The Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association (OSSA) has unanimously voted to permanently remove Deschutes County Sheriff Kent van der Kamp from its Board of Directors following an investigation that determined he had been untruthful about his educational credentials in multiple criminal cases.

The findings resulted from a formal inquiry conducted by the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office, led by District Attorney Steve Gunnels. The investigation concluded that Sheriff van der Kamp had repeatedly misrepresented his academic background, leading the district attorney’s office to designate him as a witness who will no longer be called to testify in criminal proceedings—a status commonly referred to as being placed on the “Brady list.”

After being notified of the investigation’s outcome, the OSSA Executive Committee convened to evaluate the matter and determined it should be presented to the full Board of Directors, pursuant to the organization’s bylaws. Sheriff van der Kamp was informed that the issue would be considered at the OSSA Spring Conference and was offered an opportunity to address the Board in person or in writing. He declined to appear and submitted no materials for consideration.

On May 14, the OSSA Board of Directors voted unanimously—32 sheriffs in total—in favor of a motion to permanently expel van der Kamp from his position as an OSSA Director. The expulsion took immediate effect.
