Beaverton, Oregon- An Oregon man has struck gold in the new year, winning Oregon’s first Powerball jackpot of 2025. Abbas Shafii, a 79-year-old resident of Beaverton, is the sole winner of the $328.5 million jackpot from the January 17 drawing.
Shafii purchased the winning ticket at the Beaverton Fred Meyer on SW Walker Road and opted for the lump sum payout of $146.4 million. While he declined media interviews, he shared a brief statement regarding his monumental win.
“I am overjoyed to have won the Powerball and plan to use my prize to travel, invest, and share my good fortune with non-profit organizations that are close to my heart,” Shafii said.
Impact on the Community
Lottery ticket sales contribute significantly to state programs, with approximately one-third of Powerball sales in Oregon directed toward economic development, public education, veteran services, and state parks.
The Beaverton Fred Meyer, where the winning ticket was sold, also benefited from the jackpot, earning a $100,000 retailer bonus. In alignment with its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, the store announced it will donate $50,000 of that bonus to the Oregon Food Bank, supporting local families in need.
