REAL ID Deadline Approaching: What Oregon Residents Need to Know

Salem, Oregon- As the federal REAL ID deadline of May 7, 2025, approaches, Oregon residents are urged to prepare for the transition. Beginning that day, travelers aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative — such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or military ID — to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.

With just three months remaining, Oregon’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reports rising demand and longer lines at its offices as residents seek to upgrade to the federally compliant identification.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license, instruction permit, or identification card that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Oregon offers both standard and REAL ID-compliant options, allowing residents to choose based on their needs.

How to Obtain a REAL ID

REAL IDs can only be issued in person at a DMV office. Appointments can be scheduled online, though walk-in services are also available.

Required Documentation

Applicants must provide original documents to prove their identity, date of birth, U.S. lawful status, and home address (two proofs from different sources). Additionally, applicants must present their Social Security number or evidence that they are not eligible for one. The name on file must match records with the Social Security Administration. DMV provides a document guide at DMV2U.oregon.gov to assist residents in preparing the correct paperwork.

Cost and Processing Time

The REAL ID upgrade costs an additional $30 on top of regular issuance fees for an original, renewal, or replacement license, permit, or ID card. After documents are scanned and verified, residents will receive a temporary paper card at the office. The official REAL ID card will arrive by mail in approximately three weeks.

Due to the anticipated surge in applications, DMV has hired 26 additional staff members dedicated exclusively to processing REAL ID transactions. This is expected to free up other staff for routine services.

Alternative Solutions and Services

For residents who already have a REAL ID or do not plan to obtain one, DMV encourages using online services at DMV2U or visiting one of nine new self-serve kiosks located in select Fred Meyer stores to renew vehicle registrations and avoid office crowds.

Next Steps for Oregon Residents

Given the projected demand increase, officials advise residents to begin the REAL ID application process as soon as possible to avoid last-minute delays. More information is available at Oregon.gov/REALID.
