Eagle Point Police Department Adopts New VR and Surveillance Tech

Eagle Point, Oregon- The Eagle Point Police Department has recently introduced advanced technology to enhance its operational efficiency, officer training, and public safety initiatives. The department’s latest investments include a virtual reality training system, upgraded taser technology, and advanced surveillance tools to better address community needs.

The department has adopted the Axon Virtual Reality (VR) training system, which provides immersive training experiences for officers. The platform supports training for the new Taser 10 system and offers modules focused on de-escalation techniques and mental health awareness. A key feature of the system is its ability to place officers in both the role of a crisis responder and an individual in crisis, offering a comprehensive perspective on handling challenging situations.

The system also enables officers to repeatedly train with the Taser 10 in a virtual environment without using costly live cartridges. This approach increases familiarity with the device and improves deployment effectiveness.

In addition to the VR system, the department has secured funding through Oregon’s “Organized Retail Theft” grant to deploy License Plate Recognition (LPR) devices around the city. These devices are integrated with the department’s existing Axon Fleet 3 in-car camera systems, which also utilize LPR technology. The deployment, facilitated through a contract with Flock Safety, has already yielded positive results, aiding in the resolution of shoplifting cases and contributing to the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

“With shoplifting and theft making up a significant portion of service calls in Eagle Point, these LPR devices are instrumental in helping us identify suspects who flee the scene in vehicles,” a department representative said.

The technology has also been used to resolve a recent menacing case, demonstrating its versatility in supporting law enforcement operations.

The department has further equipped its officers with the latest Axon Body 4 cameras. These body-worn cameras document officer interactions and provide valuable resources for incident review, policy compliance, and training. The cameras also feature two-way communication capabilities and GPS functions, enhancing officer safety during critical incidents when portable radios may be unavailable.

These technological advancements reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety and supporting its officers. In a press release, the department stated: “All of these devices are part of the commitment from the department, as well as City Administration and our City Council, to improve the function and effectiveness of the department and ensure our officers are provided with the tools they need to increase performance and provide a higher level of service to our community.”

Officials say the department’s proactive approach to integrating new technology underscores its focus on modernization and continued service improvement for the residents of Eagle Point.
