Medford, Oregon- Medford City Manager Rob Field has declared a severe weather event from Friday, January 17, through Sunday, January 19, to address anticipated frigid temperatures. The declaration permits the use of approved severe weather shelters to provide overnight lodging when temperatures fall below 25 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Fahrenheit with additional factors such as wind or precipitation.
Shelter Details and Services
The Medford Severe Weather Shelter will operate during the declaration period at 332 W. 6th Street. Its hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. The shelter offers food, bedding, and dry storage facilities. With a capacity of 64 individuals, the shelter is low-barrier, meaning it does not require religious affiliation or drug testing for entry.
The facility is staffed by volunteers organized by ACCESS, a local non-profit. Those interested in volunteering can contact ACCESS by emailing volunteer@accesshelps.org for more information.
Policy Adjustments During the Declaration
In light of the severe weather, the City has temporarily postponed enforcement of the prohibited camping ordinance. Tents that would otherwise be unlawful under the ordinance will not be removed until the declaration ends. However, all fires remain prohibited throughout the city.
The City has emphasized its commitment to monitoring weather conditions closely and will provide updates as necessary. Residents can stay informed by texting MED4SHELTERS to 888777 for real-time information about severe weather shelters.
Operational Background and Volunteer Needs
The Medford Severe Weather Shelter is a joint effort between the City and ACCESS. It operates based on weather forecasts and volunteer availability, requiring at least 48 hours’ notice to mobilize safely. Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring the shelter remains functional.
“Volunteers are essential to this process, and more are always needed,” the City stated. Community members are encouraged to support this effort by signing up to volunteer.
