Medford, Oregon- The Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is deploying 12 strike teams to California to assist in combating wildfires threatening communities near Los Angeles. The deployment includes 240 firefighters and 60 fire engines, mobilized from counties across Oregon, including Clackamas, Clatsop, Central Oregon, Lane, Lincoln, Linn/Polk, Marion, Multnomah, Rogue Valley, Washington, and Yamhill.
The OSFM has been coordinating with California authorities throughout the wildfire event. A formal request for assistance was received late Tuesday evening, prompting the deployment, which began early Wednesday morning. OSFM plans to continue monitoring the situation and respond to additional requests if necessary.
According to CAL FIRE, the wildfires are exhibiting extreme behavior, with both short- and long-range spotting reported. Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are expected to persist through Thursday, exacerbating the challenges faced by firefighting teams. Efforts are focused on protecting communities and critical infrastructure while working toward containment.
“Oregon and California have a strong partnership supporting each other,” said Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple. “We both understand that fire does not recognize map lines, and we are ready to help each other whenever there is a need. During our historic 2024 wildfire season, California sent us help, and now, in their time of need, we are working as fast as possible to lend them support during this emergency.”
The request for assistance came through the Oregon Department of Emergency Management via the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a nationwide agreement facilitating resource-sharing between states during governor-declared emergencies. Under the EMAC, California will reimburse Oregon for personnel, equipment, and supplies deployed.
Firefighters from Medford Fire Department, Ashland Fire Rescue, Jackson County Fire District 3, and Illinois Valley Fire District will be on a 14-day assignment.
Oregon and California have collaborated on wildfire response since 2017, prioritizing the protection of lives, property, and infrastructure. Authorities say this deployment underscores the commitment of both states to mutual aid in addressing the growing challenges posed by wildfires.
