Medford, Oregon- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), in collaboration with multiple local law enforcement agencies, will conduct a Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) High-Visibility Enforcement Patrol on New Year’s Eve. This initiative aims to reduce impaired driving incidents and enhance road safety.
The effort is funded through grants from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Participating agencies include the Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, Eagle Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department, Phoenix Police Department, and Talent Police Department. Officers from these agencies will join JCSO deputies to patrol Jackson County throughout New Year’s Eve and the early hours of New Year’s Day.
“New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, but it’s crucial to remember the importance of responsible behavior,” stated JCSO Deputy Aaron Grissom. “Impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk. This saturation patrol demonstrates our commitment to keeping our community safe by targeting those who choose to drive under the influence.”
Patrols will focus on areas with higher rates of DUII arrests and traffic incidents. Officers will monitor for signs of impairment, such as erratic driving, speeding, lane deviations, and other traffic violations.
To support this initiative, law enforcement encourages the public to plan for a safe return home:
• Designate a sober driver.
• Use a ride-sharing service or taxi.
• Host responsibly by ensuring guests leave with a sober driver.
“Making responsible choices can prevent tragedies and save lives,” added Deputy Grissom.
The public is also reminded of the consequences of driving under the influence, which include jail time, fines, and license suspension. Even minimal alcohol consumption can impair driving ability. Additionally, authorities urge residents to always wear seat belts and report suspected impaired drivers to 911.
This multi-agency DUII enforcement patrol reflects ongoing efforts to reduce impaired driving incidents and improve traffic safety in Jackson County.
