
Medford, Oregon- Residents of the Medford metropolitan area received alerts today following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake detected near Rio Dell, California.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 10:44 a.m. approximately 12 miles from Rio Dell and about 145 miles southwest of Medford.

The earthquake was originally measured at 6.0 magnitude, but USGS officials have revised that number to 7.0 at this time. The final number is expected to change as more data becomes available.
The earthquake is currently the closest seismic event to the Medford region. While no reports of damage or injuries in Medford have been confirmed, officials are monitoring the situation.
Residents are reminded to stay informed through official channels and to review preparedness measures in the event of aftershocks or future seismic activity.

A Tsunami Warning is (CANCELLED) which includes the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Davenport, California (10 miles NW of Santa Cruz) to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon (10 miles SW of Florence). – Event details: Preliminary magnitude 7.3 (Mwp) earthquake / Lat: 40.348, Lon: -124.733 at 2024-12-05T18:44:24 UTC Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is expected or occurring.
Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

At 10:44 AM today, our Shake Alert system was activated following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake near Eureka, California. Thanks to the proactive measures and preparedness of our staff and students, earthquake safety procedures were immediately followed at schools.
We are pleased to report that everyone remained safe during the event and has since been given the all-clear. This incident underscores the importance of the regular drills and protocols we practice to ensure our students and staff know what to do in emergencies like this.
Out of an abundance of caution, we remain prepared for the possibility of aftershocks and will continue to monitor the situation.
