Oregon House Democrats Secure Supermajority for 2025

Salem, Oregon- With the confirmation of Lesly Muñoz as the Oregon State Representative for House District 22, Oregon House Democrats will hold 36 seats in the 2025 legislative session. This outcome solidifies a supermajority, enabling the caucus to advance its legislative agenda without requiring Republican support to pass tax-related measures.

Majority Leader Ben Bowman (D-Tigard, Metzger, & S. Beaverton) emphasized the importance of the supermajority in addressing key state issues. “Oregonians are sending a clear message that they want a state where everyone has the freedom and opportunity to succeed,” Bowman stated. “In the 2025 session, we will focus on affordability, making government work, and keeping Oregonians safe. It’s time to deliver results for working people and protect basic rights and freedoms.”

The 2024 election results reflect a strong showing for Democrats in Oregon, contrasting with national trends that saw mixed results for the party. In addition to flipping one Republican-held seat, Democratic incumbents in the state performed better than in the 2022 midterms, signaling sustained support for the party’s policy priorities.

House Speaker Julie Fahey (D-West Eugene, Veneta) highlighted the progress made during the past legislative term, noting the focus on housing, homelessness, cost of living, and public safety. “Over the past two years, our work in Salem has been centered on governing our state with a steady hand,” Fahey said. “With election season now over, we’re ready to continue our work to deliver on these critical priorities.”

The supermajority positions House Democrats to pursue an ambitious policy agenda while navigating challenges associated with balancing the needs of urban and rural constituents. As the 2025 legislative session approaches, the caucus has expressed its commitment to addressing affordability, improving public safety, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all Oregonians.
