Salem, Oregon- The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) has activated its State Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) to ensure readiness as the state approaches the election period. The move is a proactive step aimed at supporting local communities and leaders across Oregon, and not a response to any specific threat or incident.
This activation reflects OEM’s continuing commitment to a safe and secure election process. By activating the ECC, OEM can maintain a heightened state of preparedness, allowing for quick response if assistance requests arise from community leaders or local emergency management offices during the election period.
OEM has been working closely with the Oregon Secretary of State, local county clerks, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to secure Oregon’s election infrastructure. In a significant development in July, OEM obtained approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for pre-award costs, enabling the state to enhance election security. This marked the first instance of a state receiving such pre-award support under the Homeland Security Grant Program, highlighting Oregon’s commitment to election integrity.
OEM’s partnerships extend beyond state and local government agencies to include tribal entities, private sector partners, and essential service providers. This collaborative approach strengthens the state’s ability to respond effectively to any election-related issues, ensuring that all necessary support can be provided seamlessly across different levels of government.
With the ECC now operational, OEM is positioned to monitor and support election-related activities throughout the state. The department states their priority remains to uphold open communication with its partners, ensuring Oregon’s communities are supported and election security measures are in place.
