Medford, Oregon-The Medford School District (MSD) is requesting feedback from staff, students, and families as the School Board considers possible updates to its current cell phone policy. The input gathered will assist the Board in evaluating whether further restrictions on cell phone use in schools are necessary.
Currently, MSD prohibits the use of cell phones in classrooms, except when permitted by teachers. Secondary schools implement varying procedures, from requiring phones to be fully powered down for the entire day to allowing them for specific instructional purposes.
As part of the review process, MSD is launching an online survey on October 7, 2024, which will remain open until November 1. The survey invites families and staff to share their views, while secondary students will have the opportunity to participate in a separate survey conducted during class.
In addition to the online survey, feedback will be gathered at the following events:
- Rogue Valley Growers Market (October 10 & 17): MSD’s family engagement team will be present with tablets for visitors to complete the survey.
- Districtwide Town Hall: A town hall meeting will be held in November (exact date to be announced) to facilitate open discussions and feedback from the community.
Further details on the survey, including timelines and links to research on how other school districts have handled cell phone policies, can be found on MSD’s website at msd549c.com/CellPhonePolicy.
The feedback collected during October and November will be compiled into a report, which will be presented to the School Board in December. Based on these findings, the Board will determine whether adjustments to the current policy are necessary.
