Wildfire in Ashland Prompts Evacuations and Traffic Disruptions

Ashland, Oregon– Authorities have updated orders in response to a wildfire near Ashland, downgrading both JAC-541 and JAC-542 zones to Level 2 – Be Set warnings. Previously, JAC-542 was under a Level 3 – Go Now order, which included the Windemar, Timberlake, and Clayton areas.

The fire, currently estimated to cover 5-6 acres, has prompted the closure of one southbound lane of Interstate 5. While one lane has reopened, the Oregon Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid the area. The closure is located three miles south of exit 14 in Ashland.

Efforts to contain the wildfire have made significant progress. The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) reports that the forward spread of the fire has been halted, with 90% of the fire now contained by a wetline. Crews from the ODF and Jackson County Fire District 5 continue to work on containment, utilizing helicopter water drops and reinforcing fire lines. Jackson County Sheriff’s, Central Point Police, and Ashland Police all assisted with evacuation notices.

An evacuation center has been set up at the Jackson County Expo in Central Point. The facility is prepared to accommodate evacuees, including provisions for animals. Smaller pets are housed in the Mace building, while livestock is being sheltered at the fairgrounds.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and Medford Alert will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Final Update: Authorities say the fire was GPS mapped at 13 acres and is now 100% lined. All evacuations have been lifted. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
