Medford, Oregon- Jackson County Public Health has issued an air quality advisory effective through 1:15p, August 14, 2024, due to wildfires burning in neighboring counties. The advisory warns residents to be prepared for rapidly changing smoke levels that could impact their health.
The advisory highlights that smoke levels can fluctuate significantly based on weather conditions, including wind direction and the intensity of the wildfires. Residents are advised to stay aware, as air quality can be affected not only by local wildfires but also by fires burning in neighboring counties and states.
Wildfire smoke is a complex mixture of air pollutants that poses significant health risks. Exposure to the particulate matter in wildfire smoke can lead to various respiratory issues, including lung irritation, inflammation, and increased susceptibility to infections. The smallest particles, known as PM2.5, are particularly dangerous as they can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.
Health officials have noted that certain populations are more vulnerable to the effects of wildfire smoke. These groups include children under 18, adults over 65, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, outdoor workers, and people of low socioeconomic status.
To protect against the health impacts of wildfire smoke, Jackson County Public Health advises residents to take the following precautions:
- Monitor Air Quality: Stay informed about smoke concentrations in your area and avoid outdoor activities in areas with high smoke levels.
- Stay Indoors: Keep doors and windows closed, and use high-efficiency filters in air conditioning systems to capture fine particles from smoke.
- Create a Clean Room: Designate a room in your home with minimal windows and doors as a clean space, and use a portable air cleaner in that room.
- Maintain Indoor Air Quality: Avoid activities that can further degrade indoor air quality, such as smoking, using wood-burning stoves, or burning candles.
- Access Assistance Programs: The Oregon Health Authority offers an air conditioner and air filter deployment program for eligible residents in Jackson County.
- Seek Cleaner Air: Consider temporarily relocating to areas with cleaner air, such as public indoor spaces.
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps keep airways moist, reducing symptoms like a scratchy throat or coughing.
- Use Respirators: If necessary, use NIOSH-approved particulate respirators, such as N95 or P100 masks, ensuring proper fit and usage.
Jackson County Public Health also cautions that while respirators can offer protection, they may be challenging to use, especially for those with preexisting health conditions. Proper fit is crucial for effective protection, and users may experience increased difficulty breathing or heat stress while wearing them.
Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions to protect their health during this period of elevated air pollution due to wildfire smoke.
