Grants Pass Fire Acquires New Wildland Engine from Oregon State Fire Marshal

Grants Pass, Oregon– Grants Pass Fire has recently acquired a new Type 3 wildland engine, provided by the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) as part of a state initiative to enhance firefighting capabilities across Oregon. The newly received apparatus, manufactured by Rosenbauer Emergency Vehicles, is designed to bolster both wildland and urban firefighting efforts.

The engine is equipped with a 1000 GPM Waterous pump, an auxiliary pump allowing for pump-and-roll capabilities, and a 500-gallon water tank, making it versatile for various emergency scenarios. This International cab, Type 3 pumper is particularly suited for rapid wildland fire extinguishment while also being capable of responding to urban incidents.

Under the agreement facilitated through the Oregon State Fire Marshal Engine Program, the OSFM will retain ownership of the apparatus. Grants Pass Fire will be responsible for housing, staffing, responding, insuring, and maintaining the engine for the next three years. The department is currently in the process of outfitting the vehicle and conducting necessary training. It is expected to be fully operational and ready for deployment in the near future.

This acquisition is part of a broader effort funded by Oregon’s Wildfire Omnibus Bill, Senate Bill 762, passed in 2021. The bill enabled the OSFM to build and strategically place 76 firefighting apparatus across the state. Local agencies were given the option to request either a Type 6 wildland engine, a Type 3 wildland engine, or a tactical tender.

In addition to the Grants Pass Fire Department, other agencies in the Rogue Valley are set to receive new firefighting vehicles. The Medford Rural Fire Department District and Jackson County Fire District 1 will receive Type 6 wildland engines, while Type 3 wildland engines will be allocated to Jackson County Fire District 3, Jacksonville Fire Department, and Ashland Fire Department. Williams Rural Fire Protection District is slated to receive a tactical tender.

Grants Pass Fire plans to hold a formal event once the new Type 3 engine is fully equipped and ready for service, at which point they will invite the community to view the new addition to their firefighting arsenal.
