Reckless Driver Eludes Police, Taken Into Custody on Roof of Oregon home

Bend, Oregon– Nicholas Michael Wood, a 42-year-old resident of Idaho, was apprehended by Bend Police following a prolonged standoff on Sunday afternoon. Wood faces multiple charges, including Assault II, Felony Hit & Run, Reckless Driving, Eluding Law Enforcement, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).

The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, when an off-duty Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputy reported a reckless driver on U.S. Highway 20 near Millican. The driver, later identified as Wood, was operating a gold Toyota Sequoia erratically, endangering other motorists by speeding, swerving, and passing illegally.

Oregon State Police and local law enforcement attempted to stop Wood, but he eluded them, leading to a pursuit. Despite efforts to halt Wood’s vehicle, including deploying spike strips, he continued driving recklessly through residential areas.

The pursuit culminated in a head-on collision on Brookswood Boulevard, injuring two occupants of the vehicle struck by Wood. Following the crash, Wood fled on foot and sought refuge on the roof of a detached garage in the 20000 block of SW Sunny Way.

After a two-hour negotiation, law enforcement officers utilized less-lethal measures to apprehend Wood, who was taken into custody at approximately 3:39 p.m. Bend Police expressed gratitude to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and Bend Fire for their assistance during the incident.

Wood was transported to St. Charles Bend for evaluation and will be lodged at Deschutes County Jail upon release. Brookswood Boulevard was closed for several hours between Murphy Road and Reed Market Road during the incident.

The two individuals injured in the collision remain hospitalized at this time.
