Injured Eugene Skier Rescued from Southern Oregon Mountain

Diamond Lake, Oregon- A cross country skier was successfully rescued after sustaining an ankle injury while skiing near Mt. Thielsen on Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2024.

The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. when Douglas County 9-1-1 dispatchers received a distress call reporting a 57-year-old woman had fallen and injured her ankle during a cross country skiing outing with her companion. The victim, identified as Trina Reiter of Eugene, was unable to bear weight on her injured leg, prompting her to request assistance.

Deputies activated the Douglas County Search & Rescue team, who mobilized to the area alongside volunteers from Diamond Lake Resort. Equipped with snowshoes, searchers traversed four miles into the base of a tree line, where they located Reiter and her companion just before 7:45 p.m.

Following the discovery, searchers provided stabilization for Reiter’s injury, placed her in a litter, and commenced her transport back to the trailhead.

The operation concluded as they arrived at the trailhead shortly before 1:30 a.m., where an awaiting ambulance facilitated Reiter’s evaluation by EMS at the scene. Subsequently, she was transported to the hospital via private vehicle.

“This mission shows the dedication of our search and rescue deputies and volunteers who spent their Easter Sunday assisting someone in our community who was in need of their services,” Lt. Brad O’Dell said. “This mission was very successful and Trina was extremely thankful for the care and compassion shown to her by Douglas County SAR and Diamond Lake Resort volunteers.”

Douglas County SAR, a division of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, boasts approximately 90 active volunteers and two full-time Search and Rescue Deputies.
