Eagle Point, Oregon- In a bid to prioritize the physical and mental well-being of its first responders, the Eagle Point City Council has unanimously passed a resolution declaring March 25-29, 2024, as “First Responder Wellness Week.” This initiative aims to acknowledge the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and EMS providers in safeguarding the community.
First responders, often unsung heroes, face immense challenges and risks in the line of duty. The demanding nature of their work exposes them to various physical and psychological hazards, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and a lower life expectancy compared to the national average. Shockingly, statistics reveal that first responders are exposed to an average of 188 critical incidents throughout their careers, significantly elevating the risk of developing PTSD to levels 25.6 times higher than the average individual.
To address these challenges and foster a healthier work environment, the Eagle Point Police Department is joining hands with thousands of public safety agencies nationwide to observe “First Responder Wellness Week.” Throughout the week, members of the department will participate in various activities aimed at enhancing resilience and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Training sessions and informational resources covering topics such as fitness, peer support, nutrition, mental health, and family support will be provided to equip first responders with the tools necessary to navigate the stresses of their profession. These initiatives will be facilitated through a cooperative agreement with Lexipol, a renowned policy and training organization specializing in first responder wellness.
“We recognize the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment required to serve as a first responder,” stated a spokesperson for the Eagle Point Police Department. “By promoting awareness and collaborating with our partner agencies, we are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of all first responders in the valley.”
The declaration of “First Responder Wellness Week” underscores the city’s unwavering support for its frontline heroes and serves as a testament to its commitment to prioritizing their physical and mental health.
