Portland, Oregon- A series of disturbing incidents unfolded in Portland’s Old Town Neighborhood on Saturday, February 10, 2024, resulting in felony assault and bias crime charges against a 42-year-old man identified as Corey A. Nesenson of Portland.
According to reports from Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R), emergency responders were called to the area of Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Glisan Street to extinguish a fire ignited by Nesenson, who had set clothing ablaze. However, the situation quickly escalated as PF&R units witnessed Nesenson assaulting another male bystander. Eyewitnesses reported that Nesenson used a pair of scissors to inflict wounds on the victim while uttering racial slurs. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries in the attack.
The incident is being investigated as a bias crime, as Nesenson’s actions not only resulted in physical harm but also induced fear in the victim due to his perceived race. Portland Police officers responded to the scene at 1:47 p.m., with one officer reportedly being spat on by Nesenson upon arrival.
The Portland Police Major Crimes Unit has taken charge of the investigation, booking Nesenson on multiple charges including Assault in the Second Degree, Bias Crime in the First Degree, Aggravated Harassment, Reckless Burning, and Assault in the Fourth Degree.
Detectives suspect that prior to the assault, Nesenson may have targeted a bi-racial couple with racial slurs and aggressive behavior. However, these individuals have yet to be located, and authorities urge them to come forward with any information.
Oregon law defines bias crimes as any criminal act that targets a victim based on the suspect’s perception of the victim’s race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, or national origin.
The case underscores the importance of combating hate crimes and promoting inclusivity within communities, with law enforcement agencies emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards such acts.
