Bend, Oregon- Yesterday morning, emergency services responded to reports of a fire off Highway 97 near mile post 131, north of Bend. The area is locally known as “Dirtworld” and is home to a large assortment of unhoused residents. The incident, which occurred around 09:00 on February 10th, sparked multiple reports due to a large smoke column visible in the area.
Teams from Bend Fire & Rescue, alongside units from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, mobilized to the scene. Upon arrival, responders encountered a fully engulfed motorhome, sustaining severe damage from the flames. Bend Fire units successfully extinguished the fire and proceeded with a thorough investigation.
According to eyewitness accounts, the sole occupant of the motorhome had alerted a bystander about the fire before leaving the scene prior to the arrival of emergency units. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and further updates will be provided to the media as information becomes available.
In light of this incident, Bend Fire emphasizes the importance of exercising extreme caution when using open flames, whether indoors or outdoors. They urge individuals to ensure that open flame devices are attended at all times and kept well away from combustible materials. Additionally, it’s crucial to have working smoke alarms properly installed and to avoid falling asleep while an open flame is in use.
