Jackson County SAR Rescues Snowshoers Stranded in Whiteout Conditions

Mount Ashland, Oregon– In a swift and successful operation, Jackson County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) came to the aid of a group of local snowshoers stranded near Grouse Gap in the Mt. Ashland area. The team responded promptly to a distress call made at on Saturday, at approximately 12:53 p.m., as the group found themselves disoriented and fatigued amidst a complete whiteout and heavy snow.

Equipped with emergency communications, the snowshoers reached out for assistance, prompting JCSO Deputies and SAR to mobilize quickly. Accessing the stranded group via Snowcats, rescuers used a siren to guide the ten individuals up the hill to safety.

“We are so proud of our searchers and their ability to help those in need,” expressed a spokesperson for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office on social media. A second snowcat, accompanied by another group of volunteers prepared to snowshoe or ski in, was also dispatched to the scene as a precaution.

Fortunately, all members of the stranded party were unharmed, requiring assistance solely to return to their vehicle. Reflecting on the successful rescue, the JCSO emphasized the importance of being properly equipped and commended the snowshoers for their timely call for help.

As the ordeal came to a close, everyone involved, including the volunteers, safely returned to the valley, ready for their next adventure. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the positive outcome and underscored the significance of preparedness and swift action in outdoor emergencies.
