Josephine County- Oregon- In a collaborative effort to ensure public safety during the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Oregon State Police (OSP) is joining forces with the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Grants Police Department to intensify patrols throughout Josephine County. This strategic initiative aims to address the historically elevated rates of intoxicated drivers in the region during this festive period.
Law enforcement officers, deputies, and troopers will be concentrating their efforts on DUII (Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants) and other Fatal-5 violations identified as major contributors to serious injuries and fatal crashes. The Fatal 5 violations include speed, occupant safety, lane usage, impaired driving, and distracted driving.
Statistics reveal a concerning trend, with OSP reporting 2,657 DUII arrests statewide in 2023 alone (from January 1 to December 21), marking a 2.5 percent increase from the previous year. In Josephine and Jackson counties combined, there have been approximately 355 DUII arrests this year, with 200 in Jackson County and 155 in Josephine County.
Leadership within OSP station commanders in southern Oregon expressed deep concern over the prolific issue of impaired driving in the region. They are urging the public’s cooperation in curbing this dangerous behavior to ensure the safety of travelers during the holiday season.
In addition to the concentrated efforts in Josephine County, OSP will deploy additional troopers across the state on New Year’s Eve, specifically targeting impaired driving. Authorities emphasize the importance of planning ahead for a safe journey, encouraging those who plan to consume impairing substances to arrange for a sober ride home, be it through taxis, ride-sharing apps, or designating a completely sober driver.
This joint initiative underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike as they welcome the New Year. As celebrations unfold, the partnership between OSP, the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, and Grants Police Department aims to mitigate risks and ensure a secure and enjoyable transition into 2024.
